LO2: Treatment

Rad Radio Treatment

Title:
Our show is called rad radio, this is because it is a chatty pop music programme aimed at teenagers and so this name will be an catchy fun name for our programme.

Medium:
We have decided to make a radio station which plays popular music aimed at an ABC1 audience and a both male and female audience. We have chosen to do this as there are not many radio stations that appeal to higher class teenage audience.

Proposed content:
Rad Radio will include the latest pop music, quiz’s, interviews, news and competitions, this content fits with our target audience and conventions of this type of program. As this is aimed at teenagers we want to keep them up to date with the latest news and celebrity gossip as well as allowing them to compete in competitions to win prizes. We want to also include interviews from local artists/bands and people to get the view of the wide range of people living in Sheffield, by interviewing these we can promote their band to the local community.

Running Order:

(The first 30 minutes running order)

3:00 introductions
3:03 Weather
3:05 News
3:07 Music
3:12 Presenters talking
3:16 Music
3:20 adverts
3:23 Weather
3:25 News
3:27 Music
3:30 Presenters talking

Scheduling:
Our programme is scheduled in drive time hours between the hours of 3pm – 6pm, this will target our audience as they will hopefully be finishing school/ university around this time and are most likely to be listening on their way home.

Target Audience:
we want to play pop/top hits music as it allows a wide audience, our audience will be ABC1 15-30 year-olds, We want a ABC1 audience as using sponsors such as CityTaxi and Fret magazine as they are local companies, this means they will need a disposable income in order to use these services. We will play music such as Rhianna and Drake as it is what the target audience is interested in, we have scheduled our programme in the drive-time as we think it is when our target audience is most likely to listen to the radio.

Key Personnel:
As part of our radio programme we are using 2 presenters, this is because we want our show to be chatty and informal, this is important as it helps the audience connect with the show which could make them want to listen to the show. We also need sound editors when creating sound effects for the programme which are used to make it more interesting and entertain the audience more.

Health & Safety:
In the recording studio it could be dangerous because of all the wires we'll have from the microphone, the recording system and the Mac computer, these will all be tripping hazards and the sound booth where it’s quite small if you do trip you're likely to hurt yourself. Sound levels are also important as if we accidentally have the sound really loud it could damage the hearing of anyone using the headphones or near  the speakers. We also need to look after the equipment as well as ourselves as it costs a lot and damage can easily be avoided in most situations.

Audio Assets:
Rad Radio will use assets taken from separate websites, we have looked on freesounds.com which use the creativecommons licence meaning we’re able to use the sounds and music for free on our show as it is royalty free. We also looked on Incompetech.com which uses the creativecommons licence also meaning we can use the music for free however none of the songs appealed to us so we’re just going to use songs from freesounds.com. We will also use loops on garage band to create some if the songs used in our radio programme this is also royalty free therefore no licencing will need to Be payed to use the loops and they are good quality so they will be useful to use in our broadcast.

Budget:
We’ll be getting the equipment hire and studio for free which takes a large amount off the budget, we get this for free as we’re members of UTC Sheffield and they’ll allow us to use the equipment for free. Licencing would cost a lot however we’re using royalty free music and sound effects meaning we’re aloud to use them for free. The songs we play we’ll need a licence for therefore this is really the only thing we have to pay for and it would be quite expensive. Another thing we would have to pay for is the singer Kaidawg to do the interview however he has agreed to do it for free.

Funding:

We will get most of our funding from advertisements as they will want to be advertised on our show therefore they are willing to pay us to broadcast their advertisements. Another thing we can use to get money is sponsorships as someone might want to sponsor a specific part of our show, an example would be a holiday company sponsoring the section of the show where we have a quiz where if they get all the questions right they win a holiday.

LO2 Planning a script for a radio show (set brief)

Style:

Our radio station has a live broadcast script. This means the station needs to be engaging, entertaining and needs to include all the relevant information. The genre of music we will play on this station is contemporary pop hits which have reached the top hits in the UK. This means the songs will be extremely popular amongst our audience and therefore they will enjoy our selection. Our target audience is ABC 1 students, therefore the radio station needs to be presented with high levels of energy, and humour that will keep this audience listening. In terms of advertising, the companies we will advertise will be local due to us being a local radio. We aim to include an advert or two which provide the audience with crucial information, such as a helpline if they are a victim of abuse or bullying. We will also aim to include more music than the average adult contemporary talk shows, due to the target audience being students who prefer the music. In terms of advertising, the companies we will advertise will be local due to us being a local radio. We want our friendly outgoing personalities and uplifting music will brighten the moods of our listeners. Our show is broadcasted from 3-6pm. This is because at this time people will be finishing up their work/day at school/college/uni and need an uplifting station to get them home, happy.

Our radio station will include a variety of different things. With it being aimed towards students, there will be a lot of top pop hits played, compared to other radio stations. Matt will be the main presenter with added guests for brief interviews. These interviews will be kept brief because after a long day, and especially aimed at teenagers, they won't want to hear too much talking on the radio. To keep the audience interested and tuned in, we will also hold weekly competitions for our target audience, giving them the chance to win big! we've decided to make the grand prize a weekend get away at alton towers. This opportunity should also promote the radio and get more listeners. For runners up we will have smaller prizes such as gift cards for local shopping locations such as Meadowhall. Local weather updates will briefly be mentioned top inform the listeners of the weather conditions for the next 24 hours or so, and adverts will cover local companies and helplines for the listeners.

Narrative:

To begin the radio show, Matt will open it with a brief introduction of the radio show, including a jingle. This will then be followed up with a selection of contemporty pop hits from the charts. After this he will briefly talk about the day, including news updates and weather, followed by the chance to win scheme before 2 adverts are selected to be played. After this the jingle will be played again, followed by another selection of songs. This should roughly take an hour of the three required for the radio talk show. Matt will then introduce the celebrity guest, and have a brief interview of around 5-10 minutes. After this a couple more adverts and songs will be played. To finish the second hour off, Matt will select a caller for the chance to win scheme where they will answer some questions on air to try and win. Matt will finish this off with some more top hits. For the final hour Matt will give a brief news update and top the rest of the time up with adverts, songs and a brief talk at the end of the show.

Genre:

Commercial pop/ adult contemporary. For example artists such as Calvin Harris, Justin Timberlake and Drake will be played during the show as they all have upbeat, fun songs in the top UK hits chart. This relates to the target audience as teenagers (more particularly students) tend to prefer pop to any other genre.

The target audience is students and teenagers from the local area. This includes all the secondary schools and colleges around Sheffield, and the two universities, Hallam and the Uni of. This large selection of students covers both genres and any ethnicity. All of these students should be familiar with the mind map of sponsors shown above, as they relate to their age group . These companies will be advertised during our broadcast, which will entertain and attract potential listeners.

Brief Interpretation: We've been asked to broadcast a radio station to a local audience, to target a specific group (preferably something that hasn't been done before). We've been asked to explore different radio stations for inspiration, and we have decided to create a chatty talk show targeting students.
